Staff and city stakeholders gathered at the Brighton Centre at the end of January for the presentation of ISO 14001 & ISO 20121 certificates by James Gibb, Chief Executive of AJA Auditors to Ollie Sykes, Deputy Chair of the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee.
We are celebrating becoming the first local authority to be awarded two major international standards for environmental management and sustainable events.
The certificates were awarded for the reducing the environmental impact of events in venues including the Brighton Centre and at outdoor events on council owned land.
The Sustainable Events Programme has been providing practical support for event organisers for over four years. It helps build links between organisers and local suppliers and make targeted investments in buildings to reduce running costs and improve visitor’s experience through new technology such as LED lighting. Not to confuse you with any one hit wonder from the early 90’s; I just like that title and those words are perfect for what I am about to tell you about.
You may be aware that over past years and for many of them, we have hosted the infamous, magical Holiday on Ice every January. Last year we cut the trend and had the extremely successful show Starlight Express, one of the best loved and longest running musicals in theatrical history.
This January we have a brand new show ICE, opening on Wednesday 22nd January and running until Sunday 2nd February; skating like you’ve never seen before. Speed. Style. Glamour. Grace Continue reading
Well, how did that happen? 2014 is here already – Happy New Year!
I can imagine that most of us are starting this year with the mantra ‘’New Year, New Start’’; be that referring to going to the gym, spending more quality time with family and friends or taking one less sugar in their coffee.
For me it means quite a lot more as I have returned to work this chilly January morning no longer under the title of Conference Sales Officer but instead as Revenue and Commerce Manager of the Brighton Centre, a job which I accepted back in early December.
I love it. It’s that time of year again; houses are lit up with an array of sparkly coloured lights, illuminated reindeer and snowmen are sitting quietly in gardens and the words ‘Santa, Please Stop Here’ outside many front doors. You know what I’m talking about; its CHRISTMAS and I LOVE IT!!!
It’s a time where you can really kick back, relax and enjoy your time at home with those you love and cherish. If you have young children it is just the best time (in my opinion), when they see the presents under the tree, the stockings full of gifts; the look on their face when they open their presents gives such an amazing, content, heart-warming feeling inside and out. The pure delight and happiness on their little smiling face is just a joy to see. I have two children, a 17 year old and a 4 year old, they both love Christmas, they show their excitement in quite different ways, but both brimming with delight and elation of what the day ahead will bring. Did you see Howard’s guest blog on the Conference News website recently? If not you can check it out here or we’ve been kind enough to include it below for you.
We are slightly bias here at the Brighton Centre but we honestly believe that our City is the best in the country. To those lucky enough to visit there is an abundance of sites, activities and experiences on offer. Naturally, we like to boast about the offerings of our City and believe the location itself is a great selling point for our venue.
We have put together a bucket list for those planning on visiting our awesome City…
The Brighton Centre has announced that it has secured the opportunity to host the 2014 and 2016 National Union of Teachers Conferences.
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) is made up of teachers in primary and secondary education from across the UK. Working on behalf of its 300,000 members, the Union helps to ensure fairness and equality in terms of employment and working conditions. Its annual conference, which will take place next year at the Brighton Centre, will allow all members from the Union to meet and discuss current issues in the education sector.
Whilst our location is often noted as a unique and highly attractive feature that sets us apart from other venues, we have to argue that we have a better quality still…our workforce.
Impossible to measure and to explain on paper, the tremendous service our staff provide is the main reason we see so many repeat bookings at the venue. But, unlike our fantastic location, it has to be experienced to be believed; though you can check out our testimonials to see what other organisers have said.
