Many thanks to all those who took the time to join us at the Brighton Centre yesterday for Sustainable Events: The Future and You; I hope everyone who came found the day as enjoyable and informative as I did.
You can view the Sustainable Event Report from the day here. This is what we can now produce for events that take place at the Brighton Centre should event organisers want to work with us using the Sustainable Events Programme.
It was fantastic to see so many people discussing sustainability and thinking beyond what it was considered to be and instead being excited about all the different elements that can be worked into your event or venue.
‘Sustainability’ means taking a balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress relating to events. The 10 One Planet Principles are a simple way to break down what this means in practice and these are what we discussed yesterday during the round table session;
Local & sustainable food
Land use & wildlife
Culture & community
Equity & local economy
Health & happiness
We’re absolutely delighted with the results of the perception survey which showed that, if given the responsibility to run an environmentally friendly event 35% attended the workshop ‘not confident’, but 0% left feeling the same way; whilst ‘very confident’ went from 4.44% up to 35%.
For me the key now is to continue to communicate with colleagues in the industry and to focus on what can be achieved at the end of the event, rather than what needs to be done at the beginning. The days of pages of method statements are gone and by looking through the principals above there is no reason why each organisation shouldn’t take one principal on.
The team from AVT Connect are working away behind the scenes getting the post event information up online, including the panel questions that are being answered at the moment. Once this has been completed we’ll make the web app live and you’ll be able to go to it via this page. There you can view the panel’s answers along with content from the day, watch the video, download the Sustainable Events Programme and send in your feedback.

Finally, I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the suppliers who supported the event;
